Achieve high-performance, glossy leather with our patent systems
Stahl’s Patent Leather systems make it easy for manufacturers to create high-gloss, luxurious leather for the apparel and accessories industry. These solutions use a transparent, flexible, lightfast film that protects white and pastel shades, so that the patent effects can also be applied to colored leather. We also offer systems for classic and thermosetting patent leather finishes, as well as special effects. What’s more, our patent systems meet demanding technical requirements for lightfastness, cold flex resistance, heat stability, and elasticity. So, whether you need a base coat, a water-based coat, or a solvent-based patent system, our portfolio can offer the right solution for your leather.

Stahl’s patent leather systems comprise base coats, top coats, and additives, and cover the entire process of creating top-quality patent leather. A base coat layer is enhanced with a bi-component top coat, or paint, based on a polyisocyanate crosslinker and polyester polyol.
Acetone and solvent resistance for base coat systems
Our base coat systems have a high covering and filling layer that gives the tanned leather a smooth surface to boost adhesion and flexibility, especially between coatings. These acetone- and solvent-resistant base coats also ensure a durable finish and a smooth natural feel. They can also be used for college base coats.
Water-based patent systems to give leather that unmistakable shine
Stahl’s water-based patent systems, including products from our Aqualen® portfolio, use aliphatic polyurethane to achieve a high-gloss appearance. So, whether you require soft results (Aqualen® Top SPT), or very hard with good fastness (WT-42-511), Stahl’s range of patent systems offers the ideal solution. And for an even more responsible choice, our new Aqualen® Top NG range introduces the next generation of water-based topcoats, specially designed for high-end leather goods. Aqualen® Top NG-03’s aqueous blend of advanced polymer technology and auxiliaries offers eye-catching vibrancy with a distinctive natural-leather look and feel. And with self-crosslinked properties, you’ll also get high fastness and superior durability – with no nitrocellulose or CAB, and a fraction of the VOC content.
Solvent-based patent systems for a smooth mirror gloss
Stahl’s solvent-based patent system is reactive and produces a smooth mirror gloss. Some of these products are highly transparent with a natural, smooth feel, while others are jet black liquid dyes, or are pigmented a blue-white color. Additionally, SU-8220 is lightfast, while EX-SU-8265 is ideal for adding thermosetting resistance.
