Water-based coagulation:
a solvent-free solution for PU substrates

The problem with solvent-based PU coagulation

Coagulated polyurethane (PU) base materials are used in a range of synthetic leather goods, such as clothing and footwear, fashion accessories and home furnishings. However, many of these materials are developed using the solvent dimethylformamide (DMF), which presents significant environmental and health concerns.

DMF has been marked as a hazardous substance by REACH and included in the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL) since 2023. DMF is expected to be phased out in the EU in 2025. To protect people and the planet, there is a clear need for low or no-solvent materials in our everyday items.

Redefining coagulation for synthetic leather products

Stahl has developed a new high-performance coagulation solution for PU-coated textiles that balances exceptional quality and high environmental safety standards, using a water-based formulation instead of harmful solvents. The process delivers the same porous, breathable, soft and flexible layer characteristics as conventional coagulated coatings.

This method is ZDHC- and REACH-compliant, and can also reduce water consumption by up to 70%.

The technology is currently used in Stahl's water-based Permutex® and NuVera® portfolios. These off-the-shelf options are available now for producing high-quality, beautifully coated fabrics in a compliant, consistent and responsible way.

Why choose water-based coagulation?

  • Produce truly DMF-free synthetics

  • Designed for use in a wide range of synthetic leather articles

  • Creates porous, breathable, soſt and flexible layer qualities

  • WB process is adaptable to existing coagulation lines

  • Reduce water consumption vs. DMF wet process by 50-75%

  • ZDHC-MRSL and REACH compliant
